MBABANE:Members of Parliament(MPs) in eSwatini will earn salaries almost equivalent to South African politicians after the recently concluded salary review for civil servants.

Each MP will now earn about eighty-thousand Rands(R80,000.00) including allowances, MPs are also entitled to sitting allowances and the salary increment has been announced through a Government Circular.

Reached for comments by this Swaziland News, Lot Vilakati, the Secretary General of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers(SNAT) welcomed the increment, he said MPs must be paid with the Southern African Development Community(SADC) scale.

“MPs must be paid with the SADC scale, in fact we want all civil servants to be paid with the SADC scale. But I will share a detailed comment once the Government Circular has been officially released”, said the SNAT Secretary General.

Efforts to seek a comment from Government Spokesperson Thabile Mdluli proved unsuccessful at the time of compiling this report.

On another note, the SNAT Secretary General described the recently concluded salary review as historic, he said all public servants including MPs deserve to be paid handsomely for providing services to the Nation.

“But we asked Government during the negotiating table that there must be a representative for MPs because we want to avoid a situation whereby, politicians’ salaries will be increased outside the agreement”, he said.
