Tension looming as Government delays University students allowances again.

Thursday, 1st April, 2021

MBABANE: Colani Maseko, the President of the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) said Government has yet again demonstrated that they do not take students seriously after announcing a delay in the payment of their allowances yet again.

Speaking to this Swaziland News, the SNUS President said as a Union they long noted that education was never taken seriously in this country hence they were not shocked by the confirmed delay.

“The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security is a liar and a manipulator like his boss Mswati. If the royal family was hosting Incwala or the King’s birthday, money to fund it would have been released on time. We advise Government to take the issues of students, like that of the royal family. The education system of this country is a disgrace and students should know that they would be taken seriously in a democratic government,” said the SNUS President.

In a press statement released on 25th February 2021, Thulani Mkhaliphi, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security said the delay in payment of student assistance had been caused by COVID-19 work related stoppages in the processing office, he later promised that payment would be made not later than 31st March 2021.

“Students and parents are therefore requested to exercise patience and be assured that payment of student assistance allowance will be made not later than 31 March 2021,” read the statement.
