MBABANE:Sikhumbuzo Tsabedze, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA) is highly expected to announce the pre-determined electricity tariff increase next week.
This comes after this Swaziland News reported about a Board meeting that took place on Sunday in Mbabane, the Board allegedly resolved to increase the electricity despite public resistance during the recent consultations.
The ESERA CEO released a press statement announcing that, the decision will be communicated next week but according to information leaked to this publication, electricity will increase with more or slightly less than 13%.
Eswatini has about 70% of the population living below the poverty line and as a result, the electricity increase to be announced by ESERA next week, is highly expected to worsen the poverty situation by triggering an increase in basic commodities and the costs of doing business hence some companies submitted during the public consumptions that they might be forced to retrench.
