MANZINI: Xolani Maseko, the President of the Swaziland National Union of Students(SANU) led students of the Southern African Nazarene University(SANU) on Thursday to deliver a petition to the Dean of Students Affairs Sonnyboy Mamba, demanding a salary review for Lecturers.

Speaking to this Swaziland News on Thursday morning, the Students Union President said the financial challenges faced by the Lecturers affected them as well and undermine the quality of education.

“We decided to support the Lecturers in their demand for better wages because we understand that the financial challenges they are facing affects us as well by undermining the quality of education. Some Lecturers are even failing to travel to work because of financial problems, we demand that their salaries be reviewed as a matter of urgency” said the Students President.

The petition at SANU comes few days after Lecturers from another institution of higher learning, the University of Eswatini(UNESWA) engaged in a strike action, demanding Cost of Living Adjustment(COLA).

Reached for comments, William Ndlela, the Secretary General of the Association of Lecturers, Academics and Administrative Personnel (ALAAP) said they resolved to engage in the strike action after the institution failed to award them COLA) and working equipment thus frustrating them personally and at professional level.

"We haven't received a Cost of Living Adjustment for over three years now but all our colleagues from other institutions have received theirs, the university is also refusing to effect promotions, they say there is no money since government has reduced their subventions. At one point they even offered to effect the promotions without adjusting our salaries. The situation is so bad such that the University is failing to remit monies meant to service our loans that we have with our respective financial institutions. These financial institutions end up harassing us, yet it's the University's fault"said the Secretary General.
