MBABANE: Prince Lonkhokhela, the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy accepted the Best Energy Efficiency Initiative Award won by the Department of Energy during the 2026 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Sustainable Energy Week Awards of Excellence held at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

As reported by Government online platforms this week, the prestigious award recognises the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital Solar System Project outstanding success in reducing energy consumption and operational costs, while strengthening the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare services.

“Funded by the Italian Government with an investment of €2.2 million (over E44 million), the project delivered a comprehensive energy efficiency and renewable energy solution. This included the installation of a 1-megawatt solar photovoltaic system with battery storage, the introduction of energy-efficient appliances, and the decommissioning of a coal-fired boiler that had supplied energy to the hospital’s laundry, kitchen and other essential facilities. The project was implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy and the Ministry of Health, with technical and oversight support provided by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),” reads the Government online report in part.
