MBABANE: Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has on behalf of Government, announced R200million aimed at assisting emaSwati amid high electricity costs after the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) successfully applied for an electricity increase with the regulator.
Addressing the media at the Cabinet Offices on Wednesday, the PM said Government was commanded by the King to find possible ways of ensuring that, the recently announced 13.61% electricity increase does not dig deeper into the pockets of emaSwati.
“We would like to appreciate His Majesty’s foresight and wisdom expressed in His Speech from the Throne during the State Opening of the Third Session of the 12th Parliament. Following this call, Cabinet deliberated on this matter, carefully considering submissions made during the consultation process and resolved to intervene to ensure that the negative impact on households and businesses alike is mitigated without destabilising EEC,” said the PM.
On another note, the Prime Minister said, Government decided to pump-in the R200million to EEC to ensure that, the State owned company becomes sustainable and slightly reduce the costs of electricity to enable emaSwati to financially breath.
The PM further announced ongoing power generation projects aimed at sustaining the State owned electricity company.
