MBABANE: Mswati’s Government has announced a bread price hike just a week after the petrol price increase.
In a statement released on Thursday, Manqoba Khumalo, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade announced that the price of bread would increase by 6% with effect from 1st April 2022.
This comes after the government refused to increase salaries for civil servants and further approved Gazettes allowing private companies to ‘under-pay’ workers, some employees earn as little as R1,100. per month.
"The increase has been necessitated by the escalation of raw materials such as wheat, flour and premix amongst other ingredients used in bread production", reads the statement in part.
Reached for comments,Pius Vilakati,the Spokeperson of the Communist Party of Swaziland(CPS) said life for ordinary swazis who are the majority poor and oppressed would worsen with the increase of bread prices.
“This will get worse because even petrol prices are going up.Meanwhile Mswati’s Government is spending on unnecessary airplanes while the majority lacks basic needs", he said
