CoronaVirus: South African President Ramaphosa announces 21 days national shutdown

MBABANE:South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a 21 days national shutdown as part of preventive measures to control the spread of the CoronaVirus.

Addressing the Nation on Monday, the President said it was becoming clear that the virus was spreading rapidly across South Africa and as result, tough decision should be taken to mitigate the spread.

“There would be a national-shutdown with effect from Thursday mid-night and all South Africans are expected to be at home” he said.

The President said the action taken by his government will have a negative economic impact but emphasized that this was meant to protect the people from the virus. He said his government will deploy the police and the army to make sure people remain in their homes. The President said only businesses that provide essential services like Pharmacies will remain open and people will be allowed to visit those businesses strictly for that.
