MPUMALANGA: Bheki Cele, the South African Minister of Police has called for a law that would ensure that parents who refused to maintain their children are sentenced to nine(9) years.

Speaking during the funeral of Hillary Gardee, the Minister said he was concerned about parents who were well paid but refused to maintain their children.

“In my view those parents must be arrested and be convicted to at least  nine(9) years”,said the Police Minister.

Hillary Gardee, the daughter of Godrich Gardee of the Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF)went missing last week and was subsequently found dead, one man has been arrested in connection with the murder.

Reached for comments, Colani Hlatswayo, the Coordinator of One Billion Rising Africa said as an organization that advocates for the rights of women and children they were happy to see men in leadership advocating for laws that sought  to discourage Gender Based Violence(GBV).

“As One Billion Rising we are happy to see men in leadership advocating for such laws that discourage violence. These issues of child maintenance contribute to Gender Based Violence because people end killing each other in child maintenance battles,” she said.
