NTFONJENI: Senator Themba Masuku, the Deputy Prime Minister(DPM) says the State has a duty to protect the rights of people with albinism.
Speaking at Ntfonjeni on Monday when launching the International Albinism Awareness campaign, the DPM said it remained the duty of every member of the society to ensure that the voices of Persons with Albinism were heard adding that their voices were essential in ensuring equality.
“People with Albinism face multiple forms of discrimination on the grounds of disability and colour. Their physical appearance is the object of erroneous beliefs and myths, influenced by superstitions and witchcraft. These superstitions have made people with albinism to live in fear of their lives and in other cases, children have to be accompanied and guarded on their way to and from school. They have also fostered acute marginalisation, social exclusion and physical attacks,"said the DPM as quoted by Government online platforms.
On another note, Stuky Motsa, the Director of Stuky Foundation said people living with albinism lived in fear of being killed for ritual purposes.
Stuky Foundation is an organization that advocates for the rights of people living with disabilities in eSwatini.
