CAPE TOWN: Senior Advocate Myron Dewrance has been elected the Chairperson of the General Council of the Bar of South Africa (GCB).
The Senior Counsel is the Head of editor Zweli Martin Dlamini and this Swaziland News legal team in a matter where King Mswati is challenging this publication over critical articles.
The Senior Advocate further defended the editor where Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Defense and Security, Prince Sicalo was seeking an interdict against this publication.
The election of the Senior Advocate was announced through a circular issued on Tuesday by Tracy Nothnagel,the GCB Chief Executive Officer(CEO).
"At the 77th Annual General Meeting of the General Council of the Bar of South Africa held in Cape Town on 16 July 2022 , the following members were elected to serve the Executive Committee for the period 2022/2023. Myron Dewrance SC (Chair),Aditya Kissoon Singh SC (Deputy Chair), Donald Jacobs SC(Vice Chair), Kgomotso Nhlapho-Merabe (Honorary Secretary),
Jannet Gildenhuys SC(Assistant Honorary Secretary), Anna Annandale SC, Alan Lamplough SC, Vershen Moodley, Charles Simon, Jannie van der Merwe SC,”reads the circular in part.
In the matter between Prince Sicalo and this Swaziland News editor, Advocate Dewrance told the Mpumalanga High Court that King Mswati violated basic human rights.
"The basic respect for human rights is absent in eSwatini My Lord and this we say,is the golden threat through this application.You have to understand the context in which the current situation is playing out in eSwatini.The current situation is, you have a regime which does not respect its citizens' rights, does not respect basic human rights",he said.
This was after Prince Sicalo approached the South African High Court trying to stop this publication from publishing his private information. This was shortly after this publication exposed how the Prince sneaked out of the country to buy guns meant to kill those who are demanding democratic reforms.
