KWALUSENI: Dr Salebona Simelane, the University of Eswatini ( UNESWA) Registrar has served Samkelo Ndlangamandla, a Student Representative Council(SRC) member with an expulsion letter after he allegedly clashed with security guards within the institution of higher learning.

Samkelo Ndlangamandla with four other students were charged for allegedly clashing with security officers and the destruction of property worth R 7000.00 during a Freshers Ball event on or about 23rd September 2022.

In a letter dated 6th December 2022, the University Registrar informed Ndlangamandla that he had been expelled from the institution after a judgement by the Student Disciplinary Committee of Senate.

"You are therefore, hereby informed that you are dismissed from the University of Eswatini with immediate effect. In terms of regulation 32.4 of the Regulations for Students Discipline, you have a right to appeal to the University Council through the Secretary of Council within seven (7)days of receipt of the judgement,” reads the letter in part.

Dr Salebona Simelane, the UNESWA Registrar had not responded to our questions at the time of compiling this report.

Reached for comments, Vuyiswa Maseko, the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) Legal Affairs Officer confirmed the matter, adding that they were working towards assisting the student in drafting an appeal against the judgement.

“Samkelo was charged with four others but he is the only one who is being victimised. There's also Bandile Dlamini from the Luyengo Campus who has been suspended for one (1) academic year. We are working against the clock to submit well written and challenging appeals by Monday. As a union,we call for the immediate reinstatement of these two student leaders, the verdicts show how cruel the Tinkhundla system is,”said the SNUS Legal Affairs Officer.
