LAVUMISA: Mayibongwe Masangane, the Secretary General of the Swaziland Democratic Nurses Union (SWADNU) has confirmed the closure of Matsanjeni Health Centre after the arrest of two(2)health workers believed to be part of the mob that torched and killed four(4) people.
The suspects were accused of terrorizing and robbing residents.
Speaking to this Swaziland News on Wednesday, the SWADNU Secretary General said the police violently invaded the health centre in a mission to arrest its core workers and that angered the entire staff, causing them to lay down their tools.
“When people take law into their own hands, police are quick to respond and make arrests, which is not good. Otherwise, as a union we condemn the closure of the health centre, which will undoubtedly result in unnecessary loss of life",he said.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Phindile Vilakati had not responded to our questionnaire at the time of compiling this report.
But Dumsani Mbhamali, the Somntongo Member of Parliament (MP) told this publication that the whole of Lavumisa town was shutdown as residents disrupted businesses including schools in protest over the arrest of the two health workers.
“We responded quickly after receiving the news, and we are now here at the police station to monitor the situation. People are furious and they do not appear to be backing down",said the MP.
