MBABANE:Barnes Dlamini, the President of the Swaziland Democratic Party(SWADEPA)says the European Parliament's resolution that seeks to isolate Mswati’s regime could be attributed to the efforts of human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko and other political players who vigorously lobbied the international community.
Maseko, the Chairperson of the pro-democracy MultiStakeholder Forum(MSF) had been writing a series of letters urging international organizations to put pressure on King Mswati and his regime.
After the assassination of the human rights lawyer more organizations including the United Nations(UN) called for an investigation into the death of the human rights activist and urged eSwatini to consider facilitating a political dialogue.
“We welcome the resolution, these are the collective efforts of the Mass Democratic Movement(MDM) through the MSF including Maseko who was pushing the international community to take action. We also appreciate the role played by the online media, the things you write reach the international community so that the world can understand what happening in the country,”said the SWADEPA President.
Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo had not responded at the time of compiling this report.
The European Parliament urged the EU to consider suspending funding to eSwatini amid the killing of civilians including human rights defenders by Mswati.
