MBABANE: Mayibongwe Masangane, the Secretary General of the Swaziland Democratic Nurses Union (SWADNU) has thanked his colleagues for winning the fight against Tuberculosis(TB)despite the lack of resources.
Speaking to this Swaziland News as part of the World TB Day commemoration,the SWADNU Secretary General said the rate of TB deaths have now been reduced to less than fifty (50)per-year.
“TB cases used to be so high such that they accounted for 95% of HIV deaths, but now we are only recording less than 50 TB related deaths in a year.The interventions have been de-escalated in such a way that we are now left with only one TB ward in the whole country. We thank the health workers for their gallant fight at the time when Government was struggling to provide us with resources but we were saved by the intervention of the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)", he said.
Speaking during the World TB Day celebrations on behalf of Prime Minister Cleopas Dlamini on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku noted the great strides made by the country in fighting TB.
"The country has also managed, through the Ministry of Health, to be one of the first to achieve this milestone of reducing TB burden by half. However, as we celebrate these achievements there is still a huge task ahead of us towards the elimination of this disease", said the Deputy Prime Minister as quoted by Government's online platforms.
