Assassinated eSwatini human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko nominated for the Sydney and Felicia Kentridge Award.

MBABANE: Assassinated eSwatini human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko has been nominated for the Sydney and Felicia Kentridge Award.

Lawyer Thulani Maseko, the Chairperson of the pro-democracy Multi-Stakeholder Forum(MSF) was allegedly killed by Mswati’s agents on the 21st January 2023, he was assassinated a few hours after the King threatened those calling for democracy saying his mercenaries will deal with them.

The award is conferred annually by the General Council of the Bar(“GCB”) on a person or jointly on persons or on an institution adjudged by the GCB to have made an outstanding contribution to law in Southern Africa worthy of public recognition.

Amongst the recipients of this prestigious award over the years, have been the late Chief Justice Pius Langa, the late Arthur Chaskalson, Justice Moseneke DCJ, Justice Yacoob, Justice Mokgoro, the late George Bizos SC and Human Rights Lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa from Zimbabwe.

In a letter seen by this Swaziland News,lawyer Thulani Maseko’s wife Tanele has been invited to the Awards event to be held on the 15th July 2023.

“I have pleasure informing you that the GCB at its Executive Committee Meeting held on 25 March 2023, nominated Thulani Rudolf Maseko posthumously as a recipient for the Sydney and Felicia Kentridge Award.

You are hereby cordially invited to attend the formal gala dinner as our guest of honour, at which we would like to confer the award to you on behalf of the late Thulani Rudolf Maseko. The AGM and gala dinner of the GCB will be hosted by the Free State Bar in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 15 July 2023,” reads the letter signed by Senior Advocate Myron Dewrance,the Chairperson of the General Council of the Bar of South Africa.
