MBABANE: King Mswati’s Spokesperson Percy Simelane says the Constitution does not state that anyone who wants to continue serving Government even after retirement, can approach the King for a contract renewal.

This comes after some government insiders praised the King’s alleged new approach of rejecting requests for contract extension from those who have reached the retirement age, as this enabled young people within governments to climb the ladder.

Two powerful civil servants in Urban Development Principal Secretary(PS) Clifford Mamba and senior Deputy National Commissioner Richard Mngometulu are at home after the expiry of their contracts.

When asked to clarify if the King has adopted a stance to reject requests for contracts renewal, for those who have reached the retirement age, the King’s Spokesperson said he was not aware of the rejections but mentioned that the Constitution does not state that anyone can approach the Monarch for contract extension.

“I am not aware of the alleged  rejections by the King but I am aware that the Constitution allows the King to extend a civil servants’  service if he feels he still needs him. To the best of my knowledge the Constitution does not say anyone who wants to continue serving may approach the King. With Government it's a norm to ask for an extension which is either approved or denied”, said the King’s Spokesperson.
