MBABANE: The United States(US) Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has approved the ‘targeted sanctions’ Resolution 174 that seeks to amplify calls for democracy in eSwatini.
The resolution was approved on Thursday, it will now proceed to the House of Senate for final approval and soon thereafter, sanctions will be imposed on individuals who are violating human rights.
Eswatini is ruled by Mswati as an absolute Monarch,political parties are banned from participating in elections, human rights defenders are tortured and killed for demanding democracy.
The US Resolution 174 that was tabled by Senator Christopher Coons and subsequently approved by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations,further seeks to, among others,demand democratic elections in eSwatini,a political dialogue and justice for human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko.
The human rights lawyer was allegedly killed by Mswati’s mercenaries.
