MBABANE: Vusi Dlamini, the Eswatini Revenue Service(ERS) Director of Marketing and Communications says, as the revenue institution, they expect more individuals to clear their outstanding taxes before Tinkhundla elections nominations next week.
Dlamini was responding to a questionnaire from this Swaziland News on Sunday evening, when asked to confirm if more aspiring politicians are visiting their offices to be tax complaint ahead of the upcoming Tinkhundla elections.
Elections laws restrict individuals owing tax,to be elected into public office and this, includes but not limited to, aspiring Members of Parliament(MPs), Constituencies Headmen(Tindvuna TetiNkhundla), and Development Officers(Bucopho BeTinkhundla).
“We cannot say there are any individuals who are clearing the owed taxes because they intend participating in elections. It is however inherent that during such period, from previous years elections experience, individuals would want to keep their tax status positive(compliant)”, said the Eswatini Revenue Service(ERS) Director of Marketing and Communications.
Efforts to reach Mbonisi Bhembe, the Spokesperson of the Elections and Boundaries Commission(EBC) proved unsuccessful at the time of compiling this report.
Voters are expected to nominate aspiring MPs, Tindvuna teTiNkhundla and Bucopho next week.
