LOBAMBA: Prince Mhlabuhlangene, the Chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission(EBC) has banned pro-democracy and former vocal Member of Parliament(MP) Timothy Myeni from standing for elections at Lubulini.
This is contained in a letter dated 21st July 2023, Myeni was subsequently summoned to the EBC offices at Nkhanini on Friday afternoon, served with a letter, and told to go back and contest at Nkilongo.
“In this regard, the Commission has determined that you qualify to be registered under the Nkhanini/Lusabeni Royal Kraal under Nkilongo Inkhundla. Consequently, your name will be removed from Mabantaneni Umphakatsi to Nkhanini/ Lusabeni Royal Kraal under Nkilongo Inkhundla,” reads the letter signed by the EBC Chairman.
The EBC Chairman had not responded to our questionnaire on the subject matter, at the time of compiling this report.
Reached for comments, aspiring MP Timothy Myeni confirmed being removed at Lubulini by the EBC adding that, his lawyers were busy drafting court papers, preparing to file an urgent application, challenging the decision by the Elections Commission.
“As we speak,my lawyers are drafting court papers, we are challenging the decision,” said the former MP.
Myeni said even though, the EBC wants him to contest at Nkilongo, he was eager to stand for elections at Lubulini where he qualified by virtue of owning a business hence the decision to approach the courts.
Timothy Myeni who gained popularity after addressing issues of national importance in Parliament, is allegedly frustrated by the regime a few hours before nominations.
It remains to be seen if the courts controlled by Mswati will address the alleged political persecution against the former MP.
But a trading license seen by this Swaziland News suggests that in terms of Elections Laws, Myeni qualifies to stand for elections at Lubulini by virtue of owning Bakhiphe Grocery, the license was issued under Mabantaneni uMphakatsi.
