Traditionalist Elliot Mkhantjwa urges eMaswati to stand up and fight for their rights , blasts King Mswati on Tax Administration Bill

Monday, 12th October, 2020

MBABANE: Elliot Mkhantjwa, a well-known traditionalist and Chairperson of the Swaziland Democratic Party(SWADEPA) came hard on King Mswati over the proposed Tax Administration Bill that seeks to give powers to the Eswatini Revenue Authority(SRA) to seize multi-million Estates of all deceased persons who died owing tax.
Speaking to this Swaziland News on current affairs program on Monday, the SWADEPA influential member who was known for presiding over traditional matters at the DC within the Hhohho Regional Administration offices said eMaswati should stop being silent in the name of respect even when their welfare was at stake. This publication reported on Sunday that the Bill once it becomes law will also give powers to SRA to seize pensions of the deceased, savings within the various banks, provident fund, properties among others to pay the tax bill of the deceased living orphans and widows with nothing.
“If we can allow this to happen as eMaswati, that would mean we are now out of our minds. We must just reject this, it doesn’t matter that this Bill is backed by a person of high standing in our society, this is against Swazi culture. Even if I was owing while still alive, that should not be placed on the shoulders of my children once I die. Ngisho nemnikati welipulazi angiboni kutsi angakwenta loku eTikwatini takhe, ngoba usuke usebenta kulelipulazi nje ukhokha konkhe loko lokukhiphako ngoba uyaphila eveni. But now it means, whatever I am owing will now be deducted from the Estate of my children, this is wrong. Natsi singulaMaswati kufuna sivuke indlwabane ngoba lengikubonako natsi sesilibele kakhulu sibe sitsi siyahlonipha kantsi sesisebulimeni, ngiso sikhatsi lesi sekuvuka indlwabane nyalo sikhahlele(meaning: As Emaswati, we must stop being silent in the name of respect, this is the time to rise up.)” he said.
