MBABANE:South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has demanded a detailed report from Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Thembi Simelane amid allegations of corruption in the ongoing and widely reported VBS Mutual Bank scandal, the Mail and Guardian reported this week, quoting a press statement released by the Office of the President.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted with concern media reports containing allegations of corruption against the minister of justice and constitutional development,” the Presidency said in a statement.
This comes after reports suggesting that the Polokwane Municipality made unlawful investments in VBS Mutual Bank in 2016, during Simelane’s tenure as Mayor.
The Justice Minister is alleged to have then received five hundred and seventy five thousand Rands(R575,000.00) as a loan from the company that facilitated the investment, Gundo Wealth Solutions
“A forensic report by advocate Terry Motau found that VBS, historically a small lender and a depositor for retailers and stokvels, had embarked on a campaign to attract substantial deposits from municipalities through a system of paying commissions”, the Mail and Guardian reported.
