MBABANE:Velaphi Mamba, the Treasurer General of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) and Harvard Scholar, maintains that King Mswati will eventually be dethroned if he refuses to hold a political dialogue.
Speaking to the Voice of America on Saturday, the human rights defender said, there were calls for democracy under a Constitutional Monarchy but, Mswati acted in a very stubborn manner and refused to dialogue with those calling for democracy hence the moves to dethrone him.
“The country does not belong to the royal family, in 1973 the father to the current King abrogated the national Constitution and took all powers of State and formalized those powers around himself in the 2005 Constitution, there was never any referendum around that, that’s not the will of the Swazi people. The Swazi people have a right to agitate for a second independence of the country”, he said.
When asked by presenter Peter Clottey if eSwatini might consider adopting the political system of Lesotho and the United Kingdom(UK) where there are Kings in a democratic dispensation, the human rights defender said such proposal was once presented to Mswati but he refused to dialogue with the people.
Mamba maintained that, King Mswati will eventually be removed if he continues to reject the peaceful proposal to hold a political dialogue.
