MBABANE:His Excellency Lieutenant Ian Khama, the former Botswana President has applauded voters for removing President Mokgweetsi Masisi and ending the ruling Botswana Democratic Party(BDP) political dominance.
Speaking to this Swaziland News on Sunday morning when asked to comment about the outcomes of the election, the former President urged Botswana citizens to protect their democracy at all times, he then warned the new administration to avoid being corrupted by power and work for the people.
“The people of Botswana must take joy in their new won freedom but not be complacent and take for granted that our decades of democracy and tranquility that we enjoyed before 2018, can be destroyed by another tyrant. We have learnt a harsh lesson that, power corrupts and those of weak and dubious character can succumb to temptation and engage in abuse for self interest. My advice to anyone in leadership is to work day and night on people centered policies and programs and remember they are the servant and not the people”, said the former President when responding to this publication.
Efforts to reach former President Mokgweetsi Masisi proved unsuccessful at the time of compiling this report.
Lieutenant General Khama was frequenting eSwatini amid political persecution by President Masisi who was subsequently removed by the Botswana voters.
On another note, opposition leader Duma Boko of the Umbrella for Democratic Change(UDC) has taken over as the new Botswana President after the outcomes of the elections.
