MBABANE: The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) says Comrade Mario Masuku will be remembered as a noble leader of a movement that changed Swazi politics for good.

In a media statement, Sonia Mabunda-Kaziboni, the COSATU International Secretary noted that Mario Masuku, a founding President of the People’s United Democratic Movement ( PUDEMO) contributed immensely to the growth and development of his party since 1983.

“The atrocious regime arrested, charged and detained comrade Mario Masuku on many occasions. This is precisely because he confronted the evil regime whenever activists were arrested, or even when civilians were killed merely for wearing a political party t-shirt. Comrade Masuku will forever be remembered as a noble leader of a movement that changed Swazi politics for good. Successive PUDEMO leaders will have big shoes to fill”,reads the statement in part.

On another note, the Police and Prison Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) a union for the members of the South African Police Service (SAPS)  and members of the South African Correctional Services (SACS) also recognised Mario Masuku’s role in the fight for democratic change in the country.

“He is a recipient of the POPCRU’s Gregory Rockman Award, the most prestigious award presented in recognition and appreciation of the most distinguished excellent and loyal service rendered by individuals or collectives to the organisation. The award is also a sign of acknowledgement and encouragement to individuals/ collectives who have expanded democracy at the grass roots level”,reads the POPCRU statement in part.
