MBABANE:The opening schools here in eSwatini is reportedly marred by shortage of food for vulnerable children and shortage of teachers among other socio-economic challenges, Lot Vilakati, the Secretary General of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers(SNAT) told this Swaziland News on Monday morning.
Vilakati said, as a union they “are vigorously working towards engaging Government to provide resources including the permanent employment of teachers.
“It’s not only the shortage of food, we have schools who are struggling to operate because Government has delayed payment for orphans and vulnerable children. But apart from that, we are vigorously engaging Government to permanently employ teachers, we don’t understand why a teacher who is replacing another teacher who died while permanently employed is then employed on contract. We have written a letter to the Government demanding a meeting regarding these issues, some teachers who are permanently employed are migrating to Taiwan and other countries but Government is replacing them with temporary teachers, we don’t want that as a union”, said the SNAT Secretary General.
Efforts to reach Education Minister Owen Nxumalo proved unsuccessful at the time of compiling this report.
Eswatini is facing an education crisis amid shortage of resources including teachers.
