MBABANE:Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has appealed for over R300million($20million) funding to assist eSwatini in tackling the climate change crisis.
The PM shared these sentiments on Monday when meeting a delegation from the Green Climate Fund African Division, Government online platforms reported.
“The delegation is in the country on a mission to enhance access to and delivery of climate finance.During the discussions, emphasis was placed on the necessity of a strong and well-structured readiness programme, the development of a more ambitious and inclusive climate finance landscape, and enabling direct access for the country. The Prime Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the limited access to climate finance and the slow pace of project development and accreditation processes. He highlighted Eswatini’s minimal contribution to the climate crisis, stating that the national focus should prioritise development and energy security, with actual, rather than theoretical, adaptation efforts. He further called for robust project proposals of at least US$20 million and stressed the importance of accrediting national institutions to ensure country ownership and alignment with local needs,” reads the Government online report.
Tourism and Environmental Affairs Minister Jane Mkhonta and Principal Secretary(PS) Khangeziwe Mabuza were present during the meeting.
