Students Union to collaborate with youth organisations in the fight for democracy

Monday, 22nd February, 2021

MBABANE:Colani Maseko, the President of the Swaziland National Union of Students ( SNUS) said they will collaborate with youth organisations, trade unions and political parties in the fight for democracy.

Eswatini formerly known as Swaziland is ruled by King Mswati, an absolute Monarch with Executive, Judicial and Legislative powers, political parties are banned from participating in elections.

Speaking to this Swaziland News on Monday, the SNUS President said as union they have noted that the Tinkhundla government was implementing strategies to destroy the education system and this include denying students scholarships and employing teachers on contracts. The students President said it was surprising to see the Queen Mother Ntombi Tfwala driven in a E10 million Rolls Royce car yet government claimed there was no money.

“As SNUS we will be collaborating with all youth organisations in the country and we will confront the injustices that we are being subjected to as the youth of this country. We need to rise and fight as the youth of the country, the time for lamenting is over, history has taught us that we can only win once we unite against injustice. We hope that unions, political parties and the mass democratic movement at large will join us in this upcoming campaign so that we can liberate this country" said the students President.

Pius Vilakati, the Spokesperson of the Communist Party of Swaziland (CPS) in an earlier interview with this publication said the students’ union must be decisive in their struggle.

“Firstly, it is important that they strengthen SNUS and actually embrace their union as their own and direct its growth and activities. Secondly , they must undertake political education, in that way they would conscientise themselves beyond student issues and see how their struggles connect with worker’s struggles”, he said.
