Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation(RESc) confirms receiving complaints from ‘Bomagawulane’ workers allegedly abused by contractors, Spokesperson Ashmond Fakudze says “issues being addressed”.

SIMUNYE:Ashmond Fakudze, the Spokesperson of the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation(RESc) has confirmed that, the sugar company received complaints from “Bomagawulane who are allegedly abused by their employers”’being companies contracted to the sugar company.

“Bomagawulane” are workers employed to harvest sugar-cane and because of their vulnerability and desperation for jobs, some contractors are allegedly abusing them by refusing to provide protective clothing, pay salaries on time and further uphold basic workers rights.

As a result, some of the workers contacted this Swaziland News, expressing their pain and suffering at the hands of their employers.

“We can confirm receiving the complaints Nkhosi from employees who are being abused by the companies contracted to RESc, the issues are being discussed by the Haversing Department with the intention of finding a solution. This morning there was another meeting and we will update you thereafter,” said RESc Corporate Affairs Manager when responding to this Swaziland News.

The Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation Limited (RESc) located in the north-eastern lowveld is one of the largest companies in Eswatini. 

Apart from creating jobs through sub-contracts, the company employs over four thousand(4000) people and produces two-thirds of the country’s sugar and 35.3m litres of ethanol a year. 

RESc manages its own sugar cane on two estates and also some farms on behalf of third parties. 

More than two thousand-five hundred(2500) families in the community are involved in cane production. 

RES provides housing and all infrastructure for its employees and their dependents.
