BREAKING NEWS:Inyatsi boss Michello Shakantu to retrench 140 more workers at Maloma Mine, trade union confirms urgent meeting seeking to discuss job losses.

MALOMA:Michello Shakantu,the Executive Director of Inyatsi Group is highly expected to retrench more workers at Maloma Colliery as the mining company faces financial challenges allegedly triggered by declining markets.

Wander Mkhonza,the Secretary General of the Trade Union of Swaziland(ATUSWA) confirmed through a press statement sent to this Swaziland News this week that, the Maloma Mine will soon retrench one hundred and forty(140) more workers after retrenching over two hundred and forty(240) last month.

“Fresh from retrenching 240 workers, the Maloma coal mine is in the process of terminating a further 140 workers. ATUSWA was invited to a meeting on Monday, the 1st of September 2025, to formerly communicate the Maloma’s intention to shut down one shaft in order to maintain operations with the hope that the situation would improve,” the ATUSWA Secretary General said through the press statement sent to this publication.

Inyatsi boss Michello Shakantu previously confirmed to this Swaziland News the retrenchment of the workers adding that, the mining company spent R7million paying the first two hundreds and forty(240) retrenched workers.

Maloma Colliery is part of Inyatsi Group, the company has retrenched about five hundred(500) workers in less than three(3) months citing financial challenges.
