MBABANE: Senator Lizzie Nkosi, the Minister of Health wants to launch an investigation regarding the alleged harassment of new born mothers at the Releigh Fitkin Memorial(RFM) hospital in Manzini.
This comes after this Swaziland News reported earlier this week that new-born baby mothers were allegedly ill-treated by health workers within the hospital who refused to change bedding sheets on time, they are also accused of serving them with small portions of food which are not suitable for breastfeeding mothers.
Speaking to this Swaziland News on Thursday, the Minister requested more details on the matter saying she wanted to send officials to investigate.
“Let me send a team to investigate”, said the Health Minister.
Reached for comments, Nonhlanhla Dlamini, the Executive Director of the Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse(SWAGAA) said it would be unfortunate if some nurses became perpetrators of abuse, he urged the Minister to conduct the investigation and hold those implicated accountable.
“It is very unfortunate if nurses are seen as perpetrators particularly because they made the Florence Nightingale pledge. They have a responsibility to protect and preserve lives. It is therefore very disturbing to observe such behaviour coming from nurses. We would like to encourage the Minister to carry out the necessary investigation and hold accountable all those found guilty”,said the SWAGAA Director.
