ESWATINI UNREST: US Embassy rescues NNLC President from armed soldiers, police.

MATSAPHA: Sibongile Mazibuko, the President of the Ngwane National Liberatory Congress(NNLC) was allegedly rescued by the US Embassy after being grabbed by soldiers and the police in Matsapha.

This was confirmed by Mlungisi Makhanya, the President of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) who strongly condemned the conduct of the police and soldiers.

“We were on our way to attend a meeting where we wanted relatives of victims who were killed by the police to give us names so we can collect the data but the police blocked us. They grabbed Sibongile and she called the American Embassy and the police later released her. It is clear that this is a Government that strives by misleading the world, they talk about dialogue while killing people” ,said the PUDEMO President.

Questions were sent to Superintendent Phindile Vilakati , the eSwatini police Spokesperson, however, she had not responded at the time of compiling this report.

On another note, Acting Prime Minister Senator Themba Masuku released a statement this week saying emaSwati were known  for promoting peace and resolving issues through dialogue.

It has been diclosed that the NNLC President was then placed under house arrest by the police. 

Eswatini is facing political tensions and growing calls for democratic reforms, dozens have been killed by soldiers and the police in the midst of pro-democracy protests.
