Monday, 1st August, 2022

MBABANE: Alpheous Nxumalo, the Government Spokesperson says thousands of Swazis endorsed Tinkhundla ‘democracy’ by participating in the Siphofaneni elections.

This comes after the endorsement of newly elected Siphofaneni Member of Parliament(MP) Nomalungelo Simelane by her husband Mduduzi Simelane to participate in the elections.

In a public statement released on Monday, the Government Spokesperson said the elections were testament that the Government of the Kingdom of eSwatini, through the Tinkhundla system of governance, upholds democracy and strongly believes in free and democratic elections.

“These elections are a testament that the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini, through the Tinkhundla system of Governance, upholds democracy and strongly believes in free and democratic elections. The pulsating vibrancy and enthusiasm from the thousands of voters who participated in the by-elections also attested to this phenomenon,” reads the statement in part.

Nomalungelo Simelane, the wife to Mduduzi ‘Magawugawu’ Simelane participated in the Tinkhundla elections under Siphofaneni, she won with over two thousand(2000) votes.

PUDEMO, a political organization has been maintaining that the Tinkhundla elections are undemocratic and urged people to boycott the exercise, however the Swaziland Liberation Movement(SWALIMO) encouraged their members to participate and fight Mswati’s regime from within.

Eswatini is ruled by Mswati as an absolute Monarch with Executive, Judicial and Legislative powers, political parties are banned from participating in elections.
