LOBAMBA:Timothy Myeni, the Nkilongo Member of Parliament(MP)demanded answers from Commerce, Industry and Trade Minister Mancoba Khumalo as to why Government allows companies to underpay workers with salaries as little as one thousand, five hundred Rands(R1,500 per-month.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday during the budget speech debate, the MP said workers particularly those in the textile industry were now working literally for nothing.
The MP first thanked the Commerce Minister for the construction of a factory shell at Nkilongo but clarified that the structure meant nothing to the people of that area if the workers would be underpaid.
“So as long as the Ministry is failing to address the issue of the minimum wage, that factory shell will not assist the people of Nkilongo if workers would be paid R1500. We have our mothers and sisters who work in these factories, this Tinkhundla Government is failing to assist them They wake-up every day and report for duty but receive nothing in return,” said the MP.
