Letfu Sonkhe welcomes US Parliament on resolution amplifying calls for democracy in eSwatini.

MBABANE: Mandla Hlatjwako, the Chairperson of Letfu Sonkhe Institute for Strategic Thinking and Development has welcomed the United States(US) Senate resolution 174, condemning the ongoing human rights violations in the Kingdom of eSwatini and the brutal killing of eSwatini human rights lawyer Thulani Rudolf Maseko.

The resolution is expected to debated and adopted by the US Senate Congress and soon thereafter, a decision against eSwatini will be taken.

In a public statement sent to this Swaziland News on Wednesday evening, the organization said they believe that the adoption of the resolution would send a powerful signal to the King “who is responsible” for the human rights violations in eSwatini.

“We wish to add our voice to support the resolution and its adoption. We believe that the adoption of the resolution would send a powerful signal to the King and the enabling officials in the various branches of government, including the armed forces, the cabinet, the judiciary, and the throngs of shadowy advisors who are on the frontline of the abuse of power in the country.Under the current constitutional framework, there are no legal mechanisms for citizens to hold the King to account for his actions, whether executed directly by him or through his proxies since he is above the law. In this authoritarian political and constitutional environment, the proposed Senate resolution is paramount to human rights activists and the general population currently under siege,”reads the statement in part.
