MBABANE: Vongai Chikwanda, the Amnesty International's interim Deputy Director for Eastern and Southern Africa has released a statement, warning eSwatini authorities to stop using the courts to intimidate and harass union leaders.
The Amnesty International's interim Deputy uttered these sentiments ahead of the Swaziland Transport Communication and Allied Workers Union (SWATCAWU) Secretary General(SG) Sticks Nkambule’s court appearance on trumped-up contempt of court of charges.
The charges emerged over his involvement in organizing a stay away action in December 2022.
“Eswatini authorities must respect, protect, promote and fulfill the human rights of everyone in the country and allow people to freely exercise their rights.
Authorities must stop using the criminal justice system to harrass, intimidate and persecute those who dare to stand up for their rights including union leaders and protesters," said the Amnesty International's Interim Deputy Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Vongai Chikwanda.
