MBABANE:Mbonisi Bhembe, the Spokesperson of the Elections and Boundaries Commission(EBC) says the Commission in collaboration with the law enforcement agency, is working on cases of alleged illegal campaigns ahead of Primary Elections.
This comes after human rights lawyer Sibusiso Nhlabatsi when speaking to this publication, accused the Elections Commission of dereliction of duties by failing to take action against Cabinet Ministers who are campaigning illegally and/or violating elections laws only to target, selected individuals.
Responding to a questionnaire from this Swaziland News on Wednesday, when asked to clarify the action to be taken against a Minister, who is alleged to have started campaigning illegally, Bhembe maintained that the Commission was strongly against illegal campaigns.
Labour Minister Phila Buthelezi is alleged to be slaughtering cows and distributing food parcels to voters ahead of the elections, in gross violation of elections laws.
The Minister Phila had not responded at the time of compiling this report.
“EBC is a professional Election Management Body that upholds the respect of rule of law.Our activities are guided by legislation.The Constitution stipulates that there shall be no canvassing for votes in the Primary Election level of elections. The Commission has been vocal about this and is not in the business of playing double standards.The public is encouraged to report any illegal activities in the election process to the police and the Commission. Our stakeholders have promised and proven to act swiftly in law enforcement without fear or favor”, said the EBC Spokesperson.
