MBABANE:”King Mswati is engaging Chinese investors behind the scenes and considering the economic situation, it’s a just a matter of time before eSwatini dumps Taiwan and establish diplomatic relations with China”, Zweli Martin Dlamini, the editor of this Swaziland News told the South African Broadcasting Corporation(SABC) Channel Africa radio on Tuesday morning.
The editor who was interviewed by SABC Presenter Peter Ndoro said, the King recently sent a delegation led by Minerals Board Chairman Prince Guduza to engage Chinese investors.
“As we have just reported, what happened in the last few weeks,Prince Guduza, the Chairperson of the Eswatini Minerals Board and other members of the Board visited the People’s Republic of China to try and engage investors. But this has been happening for a while Peter behind the scenes, we have some projects in eSwatini that were facilitated by the Government and investors from the People’s Republic of China. The recent developments suggests that, we might see more developments and of course, the switching from Taiwan to China because obviously, the diplomatic relations between eSwatini and Taiwan are depriving the people of eSwatini economic development Peter”, said the editor.
On another note, the editor told the SABC that, despite the fact that, eSwatini “has no diplomatic relations” with China, the country relies heavily on China in terms of trade.Dlamini cited the Telecommunications giant companies Eswatini MTN and Eswatini Mobile that use infrastructure sourced from the People’s Republic of China(PRC). He also cited the R3.5billion Mpakeni Dam tender that was awarded to a Chinese company and officially opened by King Mswati.
When asked by the Presenter if PUDEMO was supporting the possible shift from Taiwan to China, the editor said, the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) “has a policy” that supports the United Nations One China Principle.
“PUDEMO as the Eswaini main and largest political party has a policy that recognizes the United Nations(UN) Resolution 2758 that endorsed the One China Principle. So PUDEMO is following what was endorsed by the United Nations because the UN recognizes China, there’s only one China in terms of the UN Resolution. So PUDEMO has been calling for the eSwatini Government to dump Taiwan and recognize China because, as you might be aware, Taiwan is the Province of China”, said the editor.
