MBABANE:Alpheous Nxumalo,the Government Spokesperson has undermined King Mswati’s efforts to negotiate with United States(US) Senators who are pushing targeted sanctions against human rights violators in eSwatini,after the killing of human rights lawyer Thulani Rudolf Maseko.
This comes after the Government Spokesperson threatened Thulani Rudolf Maseko’s widow Tanele Maseko with treason merely for demanding justice for her husband.
The threats issued by the eSwatini Government have attracted the attention of the Foreign Relations Committee US Senators who, this week,urged their colleagues to speed-up the process of passing the Resolution.
“A year ago,internationally-respected human rights activist Thulani Maseko was murdered in his home.Unsurprisingly,the gov’t of #Eswatini puts its efforts into disparaging his widow& others who seek the truth about his death over the pursuit of justice.We must pass S. Res 174”, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee posted on X(formerly Twitter) on Monday evening.
A questionnaire was sent to the Government Spokesperson,however,he had not responded at the time of compiling this report.
On another note,in an effort to defuse the ongoing tension between eSwatini and the US after the killing of the human rights lawyer,King Mswati sent a delegation led by the then Justice Minister Pholile Dlamini-Shakantu to engage with the United States Senators who are members of the Foreign Relations Committee.
Reacting to the latest developments on Monday evening,Sivumelwano Nyembe,the Spokesperson of the MultiStakeholder Forum(MSF) said, the people of eSwatini were in urgent need of every available resource to attain justice for the assassinated human rights lawyer Thulani Rudolf Maseko.
“The pursuit of justice is not only a fundamental right but also a collective responsibility, ensuring that the truth prevails and those responsible are brought to account for their actions,” said the MSF Spokesperson when speaking to this Swaziland News.
