PRETORIA: Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula who is facing arrest amid corruption allegations has resigned both as Speaker and a member of Parliament, SaFM, a South African Broadcasting Corporation(SABC) radio station reported on Wednesday evening.
Mapisa Nqakula is alleged to have accepted a bribe amounting to over R2.3million while serving as the Minister of Defense and Military Veterans, she labelled the case against her as politically motivated.
On another note, Sinawe Thambo,the National Spokesperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) released a statement this week on behalf of the political organization, calling for the immediate arrest of Mapisa-Nqakula.
This comes after Gauteng High Court Judge Sulet Potterill dismissed the Speaker’s application, seeking to stop her arrest on alleged corruption allegations.
“The Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) demands the immediate arrest of National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula after her failed attempt to evade justice through an urgent court application to block her arrest for corruption allegations.The recent ruling by Gauteng High Court Judge Sulet Potterill, striking down Mapisa-Nqakula’s application, is a resounding victory for accountability and the rule of law”, reads the statement in part.
