MBABANE:Jane Mkhonta-Simelane,the Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs says, land degradation is threatening food security in eSwatini.
Speaking during the World Environment Day on Wednesday, the Minister called for restoration and preservation of precious land.
“As we mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), it is incumbent upon us to reflect on our actions and reaffirm our commitment to preserving and restoring our precious land.In Eswatini, we are confronted with the harsh reality of land degradation, exacerbated by factors such as a need for rural access road infrastructure. The degradation of our land not only threatens our environment but also jeopardizes our food security, water resources, and overall well-being. It is, therefore, imperative that we take decisive action to reverse this trend and embark on a journey of restoration and rejuvenation”, said the Environmental Affairs Minister as quoted by Government online platforms.
The World Environment Day celebration was attended by, among others, British High Commissioner to eSwatini Simon Boyden, Eswatini Environment Authority(EEA) Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Gcina Dladla, Member of Parliament(MP) Prince Mshengu and Sydney Simelane, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
