MBABANE:Sticks Nkambule, the Secretary General of the Swaziland Transport, Commercial and Allied Workers Union(SWATCAWU) has, on behalf of the union, condemned the life imprisonment of pro-democracy Members of Parliament(MPs) Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube.
In a statement sent to this Swaziland News on Tuesday evening, the Secretary General said a regime that jails dissents has no place in society.
“SWATCAWU is appalled by the harsh and unwarranted jail term of a collective sixty eight (68) years meted by the High of Swaziland today against former Members of Parliament (MPs) Hon. Bacede Mabuza and Hon. Mthandeni Dube. It is meant to instill fear and silence those who are calling for democratic reforms in the country. These MPs carried a representative message that resonated well with transport Workers in Swaziland. It is on the basis of this message and representations that a resolute campaign for their release and dropping of all trumped-up charges brought against them was launched by transport Workers in the country. We remain and stand with them even to this today.Martin Luther King Jr taught us so well in that, ‘‘Injustice anywhere, is a threat for justice everywhere’’. Therefore the conviction and sentencing of the MPs for mere demanding democratic reforms in a representative capacity constitute a grave injustice, which must concern us all”, reads the statement in part.
