MATSAPHA:King Mswati has urged new Correctional Services recruits to treat offenders with love and dignity so that, they can realize their mistakes and become responsible law abiding citizens.
The King was addressing recruits, senior officers and guests during the Correctional Services Day on Friday, former Botswana President Ian Khama and Commissioner Generals from the Southern African Development Community(SADC) countries were also part of the event that was held under the theme:‘Enhancing stakeholder relations for community corrections and social cohesion’.
“I have heard many good reports pertaining the way you treat offenders while here and these reports indicate that you treat them with love, compassion and care. It is such treatment that has the ability to transform and rehabilitate the lives of offenders.I have also heard of the various programmes that you offer here at the Correctional Services, which have changed the lives of offenders.I have heard that some rehabilitated offenders have used the skills acquired here to make a meaningful contribution back in their communities once released. We also follow with interest how those that have served their sentences reintergrate into society.I charge you to continue the good work that you are doing.I recall how people used to be corrected in the past, where harsh methods were used. However, experience has taught us that instead of rehabilitating offenders, such measures only worsened them,” said the King.
The King further mentioned that, the officers who graduated from the parade were carrying the hopes of the Nation.
“Professional correctional officers must constantly demonstrate attributes such as honesty, respect, discipline, integrity, and loyalty if they are to be deemed extraordinary.Implementing a productive work ethic is critical”, he said.
