Financially struggling University of Eswatini(UNESWA) to re-open on Thursday, institution of higher learning was closed after Water Services disconnected water for outstanding payments.

Tuesday, 12th November, 2024

MBABANE:Richard Masuku, the Acting Registrar of the University of Eswatini(UNESWA) has announced the re-opening of the institution of higher learning.

The University was closed about a month ago after the Eswatini Water Services Corporation(EWSC) terminated water for outstanding payments and, the subsequent protests by students who were demanding their delayed allowances from Government.

Tinkhundla undemocratic regime has been systematically destroying the University by refusing to release allowances for students in time, while on the other hand, demonstrating reluctance to fund operations resulting to,among others, consistent delays in the payment of salaries for Lecturers and other workers.

"It is advised that the University Senate has resolved to re-open the Kwaluseni and Luyengo Campuses with immediate effect from 13th November 2024",reads the memorandum in part released by the Acting Registrar.

Reached for comments by this Swaziland News on Tuesday evening, Gabie Ndukuya, the President of the Swaziland National Union of Students(SNUS) said the institution has been turned into a Spaza shop.

“Threre's no University with a sound and proper leadership that can summon students on such a short notice, it shows that the University has been turned into a Spaza shop and the management is not considerate of the students welfare. The level of suicides will escalate because they have pressure to push operations within the University without addressing the students grievances,” said the Students Union President.

On another note, the UNESWA workers are protesting in demand for their un-remitted Medical Aid, Pension Fund Benefits and unpaid Water and Electricity Bills.
