MBABANE:Vumile Mabusela, the Gender Officer of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) has urged the country’s authorities to work towards improving the economy as a way of addressing or mitigating the escalating cases of Gender Based Violence(GBV).

Speaking on Sunday during the Visionary Perspective Program hosted by human rights defender Velaphi Mamba on Swaziland News, the PUDEMO Gender Officer maintained that, some GBV cases are as a result of economic or financial difficulties among the citizens.

“Go the people in the rural areas and engage them, they will tell you the financial difficulties they are facing”, she said.

Mabusela further said, women are not only risking death by being in abusive relationships but pregnancy has become a ‘death penalty’ amid shortage of drugs and working in public hospitals.

“As a woman, once you get pregnant, you might die. So now as women we risk being killed by men and the regime that fails to provide drugs in public hospitals”, she said.
