MBABANE:Lot Vilakati, the Secretary General of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers(SNAT) has urged the Ministry of Education to prioritize the welfare of teachers instead of encouraging teachers to attend King Mswati’s upcoming Buganu Ceremony to drink alcohol.
Responding to this Swaziland News on Friday when asked to comment about a document from Acting Principal Secretary(PS) Nanikie Mnisi to all Regional Education Officers(REOs), inviting teachers to attend Buganu Ceremony, the Secretary General vigorously opposed the invitation and urged teachers not to attend.
“We are expecting the Ministry of Education to encourage teachers who are unemployed to register so that they can receive their employment letters and get paid, not to encourage them to attend a drinking of alcohol event while their welfare is neglected by the Ministry”, he said.
On Friday, the Acting PS wrote to all REOs encouraging teachers to attend Buganu Ceremony.
“This is an invitation to all staff in the Regional Education Offices and also teachers in the regions to the annual Maganu Ceremony. As the mother Ministry we would be happy if you can form part of our Lutsango regiment”, reads the Minute in part.
