MBABANE: Mario Masuku, the former long serving President of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO)has died allegedly due to COVID-19 related illness.
The death of the powerful opposition leader was by confirmed Brian Sangweni, the PUDEMO Spokesperson through a press statement dated 12th January 2021.
“PUDEMO leadership is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved former and long serving President comrade Mario “Bhambatha” Masuku. We take this time to inform our esteemed members, the entirely of Emaswati, our allies locally and globally of this sad development. We are shattered and devastated, we never fathom that our brightest shining star would lit the revolutionary skies at this point in time” read the statement in part released by PUDEMO.
Insiders within the political circles informed this Swaziland News about the death of the political activist on Monday night, and it was confirmed by senior Executive members of his organisation, however, when this publication contacted his son Mzwandile Masuku for a comment, he asked to be called later.
"Please call me later in about 20 minutes" he said.
Mario Masuku, the PUDEMO long serving President was respected in eSwatini and internationally for fighting for democracy in this tiny Kingdom, he was arrested several times by the regime for his political beliefs.
