COVID-19: Acting Prime Minister Senator Themba Masuku bans alcohol

Wednesday, 20th January, 2021

MBABANE: Senator Themba Masuku, the Acting Deputy Prime Minister has banned the sale of alcohol  with immediate  effect in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis.

Addressing  the Nation at the Cabinet offices in Mbabane  on Wednesday Masuku banned with immediate  effect for the next four weeks, he said this decision was influenced by the unfortunate behaviour among members of the public who consume alcohol in groups.

\"It is unfortunate  that we have witnessed  many  imbibers ignoring  the directive  to only consume alcohol at home, thereby congregating  in groups  where they remove masks and share their  drinks. An intoxicated  mind does not have the capacity  to think rationally  and this is dangerous  at a time when every action has a consequence \", said the Acting  Prime Minister.

Masuku also added that law enforcement  officers  have been assaulted  by groups  that were dispersed  for illegally  gathering  and drinking  alcohol, however he warned that the ban was not a ticket for the black market and illegal home brews including  buganu.
