Thursday, 21st January, 2021

MBABANE: Mbongiseni Shabangu, the Secretary  General  for the Swaziland  Democratic Party (SWADEPA)says it is obvious that the hosting of the  Incwala ritual ceremony contributed to the surge in COVID-19 cases.

Speaking during an interview with this Swaziland News, the Secretary General  made it clear that the hosting of Incwala was one way of showing that the government makes its own regulations.

“Government is flouting its own regulations, they only follow these regulations when it suits them and now everyone has to adhere .  This whole situation is totally out of control and the government of Eswatini has without a doubt failed the nation. This goes on to show that this is a really bad time to host such ceremonies as we are in the midst of fighting this ravaging enemy\" , he said.

Lizzie Nkosi, the Minister  of Health  recently released a statement and  was also interviewed  by the international  media where she was defending the hosting of Incwala which left  the nation  infuriated and shocked about the country’s decision to host the annual ceremony.

“What I can say to you is that the ceremony happened and the people were properly social distanced, we tested everybody”  said the Minister speaking on News Room Africa .

Before  the hosting  of the Incwala ceremony, Eswatini  had recorded  around 6000 cases  and about  120 COVID-19  deaths. Now the deaths  have ballooned to 427 with a total of 13 789 confirmed  cases of COVID-19 to date  in a period  of less than a month.
