MBABANE:ColaniHlatjwako, the Coordinator of One Billion Rising Eswatini has condemned the killing of Nhlangano teacher Sikhanyiso Fakudze by her boyfriend.
In a statement sent to this Swaziland News, the women and children’s rights advocacy organization said, the killing of the Nhlangano teacher was not an isolated case.
“This is femicide and it is a national emergency. The ongoing pattern of violence is a reflection of a society that has become dangerously desensitized to gender-based violence. We are raising boys to believe that controlling, hurting, or even killing a woman is an acceptable response to emotional conflict,” she said.
Hlatjwako said women hope for care, respect, and partnership in relationships only to face emotional abuse, physical violence, and death, she described intimate relationships as war zones these days not sanctuaries.
“Equally troubling is the justice system’s failure to protect women. It is disturbing that people who have killed or abused are allowed to walk free on bail. This is not justice, it’s a betrayal.One Billion Rising Eswatini is calling for an urgent review of bail conditions for perpetrators of violence”, she said while calling for strengthening of laws to ensure that, perpetrators are denied bail.
